Japan Nikko Travelogue vol.1

Hi, this is Rin.

I went on a trip to Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture for two days and one night in October 2022.

Nikko is about 160km by car from Tokyo, and if all goes well, it will take less than two hours.

Since October is the best season for Autumn leaves and it was weekends, I worried about the traffic jams, but it took 2 hours and a half after leaving at 6:30 am.

I recommend to leave early and take a rest in destination.

Nikko Toshogu(日光東照宮)

Firstly, I went to Nikko Toshogu.

Nikko Toshogu is a Shinto shrine situated in Nikko, and this is listed in 1999 as a World Heritage site.

There is a mausoleum of Ieyasu Tokugawa, who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603.

There were so many people visit here. I waited a little while to enter the parking lot, but I was able to park after waiting 15 min.

I could see Sleeping cat(Nemuri Neko).

And this is the mausoleum of Ieyasu Tokugawa.

I also made a wish at the wish-fulfilling cedar tree 🙂

Yunishigawa Onsen, Hana to Hana

I stayed at Yunishigawa Onsen in Nikko.

Yunishigawa Onsen is a small hot spring town.

The town was founded after the Taira clan (also known as the Heike clan) was defeated by the Minamoto clan (also known as the Genji clan) for political supremacy over Japan towards the end of the Heian Period (710 – 1185), and many members of the Taira clan fled into hiding in remote regions of Japan. Yunishigawa was one such hidden settlement of Taira refugees.

And I stayed at Hana to Hana in Yunishigawa Onsen.

The hotel is divided into spring, summer, autumn, and winter halls, and our room was in spring hall.

The room was spacious and I was able to spend a relaxing time.

Dinner with hearth style

Heike Okariba-yaki reflects the history and tradition of Irori (hearth) grill, which is known that defeated soldiers of Heike (Taira clan) used to eat.

We can eat grilled chicken, fish, and rice cake.

Everything was delicious and I had a good time.
